Universal Technical Institute-Austin celebrates inaugural class of HVACR graduates

AUSTIN, Texas – May 15, 2024—Universal Technical Institute-Austin recently celebrated the first graduating class of its HVACR technician training program. The campus opened its doors in May 2022 and began offering the program in July 2023.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2022 to 2032, highlighting the increasing demand for skilled technicians in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

"Our 39-week HVACR program provides students with an understanding of electricity, refrigeration, and commercial HVACR and helps prepare graduates to work on numerous units across the country," shared UTI-Austin HVACR Instructor Dereck Granados. "Passing on my knowledge to the next generation holds great significance for me. When I was learning, knowing I could rely on someone for assistance brought comfort."

SALT Service Co., an Austin-based plumbing, air, and electric services company, has hired program graduates from the inaugural class. SALT Service Co. Operations Manager James Chambers noted, “At SALT, our commitment to our customers is perfect work. So it's important to ensure our technicians have the proper training; in addition to the technical skills that UTI-Austin HVACR graduates have, their level of professionalism is also impressive."

UTI-Austin President Julie Mueller noted, "Given our state's varied climate, HVACR technicians’ expertise is essential for maintaining comfort and efficiency in homes and businesses across the state.”

"UTI Austin's inaugural HVACR graduating class marks a significant milestone, showcasing our commitment to meeting Texas’s evolving and varied workforce demands," added President of UTI Division Tracy Lorenz.
