Universal Technical Institute-Austin Celebrates First Anniversary and Key Milestones, Announces New Programs and Events
"Our students, graduates, industry partners, instructors and team members have been the driving forces behind our success in this first year of operation. This milestone anniversary serves as the perfect opportunity to look back and recognize our key accomplishments, while looking ahead to an exciting future,” commented Campus President Julie Mueller.

AUSTIN, Texas (July 27, 2023) – The Universal Technical Institute-Austin campus recently celebrated its first anniversary and major milestones. UTI-Austin is also announcing these and other programs and events that launched this summer:

The Austin campus introduced a Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) program in July 2023, with the first class starting on July 17. Registration is open for new students.

Incoming high school seniors enrolled in the no-cost, three-week Summer Ignite program to get a head start on their training at UTI while learning career skills that are in demand. UTI-Austin hosted Ignite sessions from June 26 through July 14 and from July 17 through Aug. 4.

UTI-Austin welcomes campus tours for prospective students and others interested in learning more about UTI’s program offerings.

The Austin campus hosted its first classes on May 16, 2022, at its 301 West Howard Lane location. This 101,315 square-foot facility is designed with an innovative footprint that includes 11 classrooms, six hybrid classroom/labs, and seven stand-alone labs.

Shortly after its opening, the UTI-Austin campus and campus president Julie Mueller received letters of commendation from Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Austin Campus First Year Milestones

As the third Universal Technical Institute campus in Texas, the opening of UTI-Austin corresponds with UTI’s ongoing strategic growth and diversification plan that includes extending its transportation, skilled trades and energy education programs offerings in high demand geographic regions. UTI-Austin offers four core programs including Automotive Technology II, Diesel Technology II, Welding Technology, and combined Automotive and Diesel Technology.  The HVACR program starting in July Is the fifth for the Austin campus.

Mueller, who joined UTI  almost 25 years ago, relocated to Texas in 2021 to assume the role of UTI-Austin campus president. She is the immediate past president of the UTI campus in the Chicago suburb of Lisle, Ill.

  • Within the first 13 months of operating, UTI-Austin hosted three formal graduation ceremonies that were attended by hundreds of supportive friends and relatives.

The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do, and that enthusiasm has really encouraged me as a student. The education I received at UTI has been invaluable in my career and was instrumental in helping to prepare me for future success in the industry,” commented Trinity Moore, a May 2023 automotive technology graduate.”

One of two students who spoke at the UTI-Austin graduation ceremony on May 13, 2023, Moore was accepted into the Porsche Technology Apprentice Program (PTAP) and is pursuing a career as a high-end automotive technician.

  • During the first 15 months that UTI Austin has been open, UTI faculty and staff have hosted these and many other events that include, but are not limited to:
    • Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Reception and tour attended by UTI Chief Executive Officer Jerome Grant, elected officials, employer partners, business and community leaders, UTI alumni and prospective UTI students
    • Educator Seminars
    • Future Student Workshops
    • SkillsUSA competitions for high school students
    • Top Tech Challenge
    • Two Summer 2022 Ignite sessions and two Summer 2023 sessions
    • Five Career Fairs including one focused on just welding employers and one as recently as June 15
    • Program Advisory Committee Meetings with employer partners
    • Texas Workforce Commission visits
    • Texas Governor’s Commission for Women visit
    • Veterans’ orientations programs
    • National open house events
  • UTI-Austin has established mutually beneficial relationships  with approximately 300 employers who offer part-time and full-time employment opportunities for students, speak to students on campus, and participate in job fairs on campus.  Some of these employers are early employment partners.
     
  • From May 2022 through May 2023, UTI-Austin hosted three auto/diesel job fairs and one welding job fair. The Austin campus  recently hosted another job fair on June 15.

UTI-Austin job fairs are open to current students and alumni so that they can meet with potential employers, learn about future employment opportunities, and submit their resumes. These job fairs are extremely well-attended. For example, more than 50 employer partners participated in the job fair that UTI hosted this past March with 1,500 collective job openings.

  • In January 2022, UTI-Austin was approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs  (VA) as a career college that active-duty military, reservists and veterans can attend using their GI Bill educational and training benefits. UTI-Austin’s Automotive Technology II and Automotive & Diesel Technology II programs have been VA-approved. The campus also opened a Veterans Lounge for students who are U.S. military veterans. The Veterans’ Lounge is decorated with flags from each U.S. military branch and offers reliable Wi-Fi, a smart TV, and comfortable furniture for studying, relaxing and recharging.

UTI Military admissions representatives, most of whom are U.S. veterans themselves, are well-equipped to help veterans navigate the complexities of VA benefits, including Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits and other GI Bill benefits.
